Gurdwara Saragarhi

Gurdwara Saragarhi was established on 14th February, 1902 at Amritsar. It is located close to Dharam Singh Market, Town Hall which is at walking distance from Sri Harmandir Sahib. It was built in the memory of 21 Sikh soldiers of 36th Sikh Regiment, who gave their life while defending the Saragarhi Fort in Waziristan on 12th September, 1897.

Approximately 10,000 Afghan soldiers attacked Saragarhi fort on this day but were detered by only 21 brave Sikh soldiers led by Havaldar Ishar Singh. The battle continued throughout the day but the valiant Sikh soldiers fought with courage and valor. Though Sikhs were so less in number that they could have easily left the post and moved back but they stood their ground and didn’t show their back in the battle field.

The Afghans could not break the will and the fighting spirit of the fearless Sikhs. Then there was a time when only 2 Sikh soldiers were left and they fought Afghans with daggers in their hands and gave a tough fight to the enemy before giving up their life for the country. Each of the soldiers was awarded “Indian Order of Merit”, the highest bravery award and was given a standing tribute in the British parliament.

The Saragarhi Gurdwara was built in Amritsar by the then Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, Sir Charles Pevz. This Gurdwara stands as a memorial to pay honour to the Sikh soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the battle against Afghans. The Saragarhi memorial is enclosed by many small and big cannons having the names of 21 brave soldiers inscribed on its walls which were contructed by the Indian Army with the stones brought from the Saragarhi fort.
