Gurdwara Tarn Taran Sahib

Gurdwara Tarn Taran Sahib is located in the city of Tarn Taran Sahib at about 25 kms from Amritsar. It was built by Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib in 1590 when Guru Sahib visited this place and bought some land in Khara and Palasaur villages. After possessing the land, Guru Sahib started the excavation of the Sarovar and the construction work of Gurdwara. The foundation stone of this religious and historical town Tarn Taran Sahib was laid in 1596.

Gurdwara is a graceful three storeyed building at one side of the Sarovar. It stands in the middle of a marble floored platform and can be reached through a double storeyed arched doorway. The upper part of the structure is covered with magnificent gold plated sheets. The lotus dome has a gold apex with an umbrella shaped gold top. The interior walls and ceiling is beautifully decorated with complex designs and reflecting glass pieces.

The Sarovar here is the biggest in the history of any Sikh Gurdwara. A white marble pathway runs around the tank and has a verandah (corridor) all around. It measures 289 mts on the northern side, 283 mts on the southern side, 230 mts on the eastern side and 233 mts on the western side. It is strongly believed that the holy water in this Sarovar possesses the healing qualitites and is capable of curing leprosy.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh during his rule visited this place and started the restructure of the Gurdwara and gave it a new look. The walls were decorated with exclusive embossed work and beautiful designs on the gold paltes donated by him. This Gurdwara is also known as Sri Darbar Sahib, Tarn Taran as it resembles with Sri Darbar Sahib (Sri Harmandir Sahib) Amritsar in many ways.

Many celebrations are held in this Gurdwara including all the Gurpurabs, the martyrdom day of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib and Baisakhi, the founding day of Khalsa. Gurdwaras like Guru Da Khooh, Manji Sahib, Takkar Sahib, Bibi Bhani Da Khooh and many more historical Gurdwaras and shrines reside in the complex of Gurdwara Tarn Taran Sahib.
